What trees will we plant?
Longleaf pines
The longleaf pine is native to the southeastern region of the United States. It extends into Florida and is very common. Despite how common it is in Florida its conservation status is endangered. Not only are we trying to help combat this endangered status, but the longleaf pine also has plenty of benefits.
Benefits
Biodiversity and Habitat: Longleaf pine forests are known for their exceptional biodiversity and provide habitat for numerous plant and animal species.
Carbon Sequestration: Longleaf pine trees have the ability to store significant amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, making them valuable in the fight against climate change.
Soil Stabilization: The long, deep taproots of longleaf pine trees help to stabilize the soil and prevent erosion.
Southern live oak
The Southern live Oak is also native to the Southeastern United States and is an evergreen oak tree endemic. It is the iconic southern tree with winding shade casting branches. East hill is one of the most beautiful and lush areas in Pensacola because of these trees.
Benefits
Shade and Cooling: Southern live oak trees have a broad, dense canopy that provides excellent shade, making them ideal for cooling urban areas and reducing the heat island effect.
Storm Protection: With their strong branches and deep root systems, southern live oaks offer natural protection against strong winds and storms.
Carbon Sequestration: Like other trees, southern live oaks absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their biomass, helping to mitigate climate change.
First Projects
The first project we will be spending the majority of our resources on is planting longleaf pines in the Coldwater gardens area near Pensacola, Florida. Around 250 longleaf pines will be planted in the area, and we have been given permission to do so. These trees will be planted as not only seeds but also saplings. The results from this project will be a more lush environment at cold water gardens, and all the other environmental benefits from the long leaf pine. Our next project will be more local. We will work to plant as many southern live oaks in Pensacola as we can.
